Chapter 3

O ver the next few weeks things become increasingly more complicated between the three of us. Which doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad, but they require some careful navigating. I’m prepared for it, and Derek is so patient that it warms my heart. It’s hardest on Colin. I knew it would be.

No matter what Derek and I have done to make Colin feel comfortable, he’s still entering into an already established relationship. I’m used to the bullshit people on campus throw my way, and my boyfriend could give two shits, but Colin is involved in campus activities. As a part of a team, we have to worry about how they’ll handle learning he’s now in a relationship with Derek and myself.

Because that’s what it is. No matter how it started, there’s no denying I’m dating Colin now, too. While things haven’t progressed sexually between the guys, there’s no telling what may grow. I could care less if people call me a whore or a slut, they’ve done worse. But our sweet boy is different.

Which is why I’m surprised to see him in the hallway, one foot bent against the wall and arms crossed over his chest, when I leave my lecture. As soon as he sees me, he pushes off the wall and stalks to me. I look around us, but Colin is focused only on me. He reaches me and kisses me. My brain goes all buzzy, but it’s impossible to not hear the gasps around us.

When I pull back, I start to assess the social damage, but Colin holds my face and leans his forehead against mine. “It doesn’t matter.”

“It does,” I whisper. “For you, it does.”

His head shakes. “No, it doesn’t. I’m happy. They can all fuck off.”

We only part when someone claps Colin on the shoulder, and we look up to see Derek. Somewhere behind me I hear someone let rip and “ohhhh, shit!” expecting some kind of blowup that will never come. Derek ignores it, so we do, too. Instead, he takes my hand and Colin wraps an arm around my waist, and we walk down the hall together.

“I have to get to my next class,” Derek says as we walk past a few slack jawed girls.

I squeeze his hand. “I am going to grab a bite to eat and then head back to the apartment.”

At this point, I’ve pretty much just moved in with them. I spend most of my nights in with Derek, but snuggles with Colin are becoming more frequent.

“I’ll be back to the apartment as soon as this lab is over,” Derek tells us. “Then I have to get on the road.”

Colin squeezes my side. Derek has had this trip home planned for a while now. It’s his sister’s birthday and the drive will take five hours, but he has to go. Originally, I was going to go with him, but we both decided I should stay with Colin. There is a big game this weekend and one of us wants to be here for it.
